PAR as an indicator of lighting power
The PAR parameter, which we should pay special attention to, allows us to read photosynthetic active radiation. Its unit is expressed in micromoles of photons per square meter per second, and photons in the range of wavelengths stimulating the photosynthesis process (~400-700 nm) are the most valuable.
Simply speaking – PAR is representing all the colors of visible light, on a coral surface. The higher the PAR value, the more intense the photon power is, they higher is the frequency at each light reaches corals. This means that the higher the PAR value, the more intensive photosynthesis is carried out. Which leads to a better coral growth.
How does light affect corals?
Corals can eat using light because they have tiny algae living inside them that do photosynthesis. The algae turn light, carbon dioxide, and water into food like sugars and amino acids. The corals give the algae a safe place to live and nutrients, and in return, the algae give the corals energy, oxygen, and other important stuff
